    1.Animation Principle Analysis

Staging: In this clip, this is the first time that Joe first meets Jerry. The staging clearly shows Jerry’s status within the Great Before.  Jerry is taller and larger than the surrounding souls (picture 1.) The audience’s attention can be catched easily by it and realize this character’s status is higher than other characters probably. The audience also can be reminded of  interaction between elders and children, such as a parent and child or teacher and students. In Picture 2, low-angle shot reinforce the audience’s impression of Jerry’s status, although her tone is gentle and friendly.

Squash and Stretch: Jerry’s abstract 2D design allows for flexible shape transformation. In picture 3, there is a clear stretch when Jerry changes her shape to move underground, changing her position. like the water flowing into the soil.  When she returns to the ground, her body rebounces slightly. So it allows the audience to realize that Jerry is a fluid creature.

Secondary Action: In picture 4 and picture 5, when Jerry says ‘ Hey ,’ the main action is her facial expression, and the secondary action is her hair transforming from rounded to sharp, conveying mild anger or a warning. In addition, when she apologizes to Joe, she maintains the stoop down and shrugs. These gestures represent Jerry as a kind and friendly creature.

Follow Through and Overlapping Action:In Jerry’s case, we can find that Jerry’s  hair follows the body’s movement, and different parts of his body move at slightly different times.

    Picture 6.

But follow through and overlapping action are not enough perfect. Perhaps it is for abstract character design. the head and neck often move together with the chest, rather than independently (Picture 7 ). In Picture 6 , when Jerry returns to the ground, the follow through and overlapping are applied to his body. However there weren’t obvious shape changes in his head and neck. In the previous shots, Jerry is a highly fluid and flexible creature. Therefore, in this shot her movement appears more stuck, which may reduce the audience’s perception of his fluidity.
